You want scale, and you are prepared for what scale requires: people, systems, a maintenance calendar and a garden that is a project rather than a feature. Done well it is the most generous way to live, because an estate is fundamentally a machine for having other people in your life.
What works about it
Space to put guests properly, a garden that can be developed over decades, and the ability to host at a level that is simply impossible in a smaller house. The good ones also get better every year, which almost nothing else on this list does.
What to watch
The running cost is between two and four and a half per cent of value a year and it is not optional. Budget the maintenance reserve from year one rather than discovering it in year seven. And keep a small house inside the big one: one room, one kitchen corner and one bedroom that work when there is nobody there and nothing is switched on.
